A lot of people that I have taught over the years have asked me how they can make money online, or gain leads for their business through the web. There are many ways to do this, but at the core, there is only one fundamental element that matters.
Increase your website traffic!
Sounds easy right? Well first of all, nothing is easy, but if you put some time and effort into your website you can make this happen over time.
Before I give you some tips on gaining website traffic, I'd like to share some of the common misconceptions that people have about having a website.
- Most people think that if they have a website that traffic will come. The old if you build it they will come saying. Nothing could be further from the truth. Having a website is only step one. No one is going to visit your website if they cant find it.
- Most people believe that search engines will pick up their site over time and they will gain traffic from them. While this is partly true, guess what? Your site is competing with millions of others. Why should the search engine choose yours to be ranked higher over anyone else's?
- Most people believe that people who make money online have it easy. Not true. Making money online is hard work and requires you to sacrifice many hours in a day.
- Most people believe that their web developer is going to incorporate Search Engine Optimization(SEO) into the cost of building their website. Guess what? If you believe this you are a fool. Your web developer will most likely put a few keywords in the keyword meta tags, fill in the description and page title and be done with it. However, this isn't SEO. Any professional SEO will tell you that there is a lot more than this that goes into SEO. What about link building?Are they doing that? Doubt it. So you are probably thinking. Am I getting scammed from my web developer? No, your web developer is probably doing what they believe to be SEO. However, most web development shops are good at web development not SEO. Let them stick to what they are good at.
- Most people believe that they can simply pay one of those sites on the web that claims to submit their site to multiple search engines and it is going to get them ranked. Wrong! I haven't seen one of these work in...well ever. And besides, submission to a search engine is different than ranking. And guess what? Submission to Google, Yahoon and MSN is free. Why would you pay for it?
Ok, so now that you know all of the above. How can you gain more traffic to your website? I like numbers so here are a 10 tips that will bring in traffic.
- Learn SEO or pay a professional SEO to help you.
- Optimize your pages using SEO techniques.
- Create as much content on your website as possible. The more content you have the more the search engines will pick up your pages. Sometimes for things that you weren't expecting.
- Create a blog and write, write write. This is one way to create more content as stated above. Write about your industry.
- Become a member of different forums that are pertinent to your business. I mean really become an active member. We do BlackBerry training, so I am an active member of Crackberry forum, and BlackBerry forum. When I say active member, I provide value others who post questions, and in my signature is a link to my site.
- Join a group on a social networking site like LinkedIn. Provide value to the members of the group by asking and answering questions. Of course provide a link back to your site. DO NOT SPAM THE GROUP.
- Find other directories or business's that are in your industry to link to you. Referred traffic is generally very targeted.
- Create a pay per click account with Yahoo, MSN, or Google. This can be costly but if done correctly can increase your traffic dramatically.
- Send targeted email promotions or news letters to current customers.
- Spread the word through word of mouth. If your product or service is good then it will spread.

This information is all right on. It's funny how many people think that their web designer is going to optimize their site or "you build it and they will come" It just doesn't work that way. You have to be very proactive and deliberate to generate website traffic.

I haven't really done anything to optimize my forums or publicize as I wanted to figure out what the heck I was doing before trying to get new people. Even still, as the number of topics has increased we've gone from 20-30 search hits a day (most of them from people who forgot to bookmark looking for us by name!) to 200-400 a day. These are just regular forum topics written by people not thinking about SEO at all - I can only imagine how much that number would have gone up with optimized content!

Another important thing to point out...if you get an SEO professional involved BEFORE you have your website designer build your site, you could save yourself a lot of hassle. Have the two work together so neither has to "redo" anything to make the strategies fit.
